Problem and Solution
Problem: Unconscious Bias in the Workplace
Many companies face the challenge of unconscious bias in the workplace, where employees unintentionally hold and act upon stereotypes or prejudices towards certain individuals or groups. Unconscious bias can negatively impact hiring decisions, promotions, team dynamics, and overall workplace culture. It may lead to unfair treatment, hinder diversity and inclusion efforts, and contribute to a less productive and innovative work environment.
Solution: eLearning Course on Unconscious Bias
To address the problem of unconscious bias, Blue Ridge company asked us to create an eLearning course specifically focused on raising awareness and educating employees. The course covered topics such as recognizing different forms of bias, understanding the impact of bias on individuals and the organization, and the benefits of resolving unconscious bias. Through the interactive module and assessments, employees can gain insights into their own biases and learn how to foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment. This proactive approach helps in building a diverse and inclusive workplace culture, fostering better collaboration, and enhancing overall organizational performance.
Process
Process: I was given the storyboard for this training course and had to develop the course according to the details and instructions for each slide. This simple activity is based on the Implicit Associations Test, or IAT. It was developed to look for the unconscious bias people have in a variety of categories such as race, gender, and weight. I built a version of the Gender-Career assessment to look at the link between family and females and between career and males.
Visual Storyboard
I was given the storyboard in a PowerPoint format. It explained and showed how each of the slide in Storyline should look and function. The storyboard also gave instructions on the narrations and how the audio function of each slide should work.
Development
This eLearning project was created in Articulate Storyline 360. I used many types of interactions on each slide as dictated by the storyboard I was given which provided learner engagement. In Storyline I designed the slides and mostly used layers to show information strategically. The audio was added to enhance the learning experience and flow of the course. The audio narration was given in the storyboard and I had to record different audio for each slide. Some slides had 3 different audio piece and careful attention was given to the timing of each based on user selection. Careful attention was also paid to the use of states and triggers and animations for functionality. I got feedback several times and made changes based on those recommendations each time to produce this course deliverable.
